A Note From the President {April 12, 2016}

The three pillars of the Jaycees are “Leadership, Community, and Success”, and this month we’re knocking the “Community” element out of the park. We started April off by having representatives from the Kiwanis Santa MonicaRotary Club of Santa Monica, the Santa Monica Bay Woman’s Club, and the Santa Monica Lions Club (the wonderful faces above) join us at our Monthly Membership Meeting to clue us in on what it’s like to be a member of each club. Moral of the story? We’re all in this together. Each group might have their own traditions and pet organizations they support, but at the end of the day they all participate in one another’s activities and support each other’s groups whenever possible. Santa Monica is lucky to have so many active and fun service organizations who love this city. To learn more about each group, head to the new Santa Monica Service Groups Facebook page.

To keep the volunteering momentum going, we have not one, not two, but THREE volunteer opportunities between now and the end of the month. We’re kicking it off this Friday by helping out at the Santa Monica History Museum Spring Fundraiser reception honoring Santa Monica local cutie, Shirley Temple. Then a week later we’ll be celebrating Arbor Day with the Santa Monica Service Groups and the Santa Monica Recreation & Parks Commission by planting trees in the new Service Club Grove of Trees at Crescent Bay Park. We’ll wrap the month up with one of our favorite fundraiser events of the year, the 20th Annual Westside Coalition Bowl-a-thon. We have a handy new page on our website that has all upcoming volunteer opportunities along with a place where you can sign up for the one (or ones) that strike your fancy.

Get out there and enjoy the sunshine while the rest of the country actually feels the effects of “April Showers” (an urban legend like El Nino if you ask me) and don’t forget to take time to give back to this beautiful city that gives so much to us.
